Homeless Shelter Receives Federal Trial Extension

The preliminary injunction and federal court date have been extended for the New Life Evangelistic Center. The extension grants the shelter additional time to meet city permit standards before evicting nearly half of the 63 current residents. Rev. Larry Rice says he has no plans to turn away anyone in need:

“They’ve already been through so much. They finally got their lives coming back together for the particular moment. And for the city to make us go back to 1976 and abide by a number there when we were told in 1997 that we were a church and had a right to do it. This is important though, not just to New Life Evangelistic Church, but to every church in the greater St. Louis area and every church in America. That’s why we are fighting this in the federal court.”

Resident Scott Egan says New Life Evangelistic Center is more than just a shelter for the homeless:

“This is my home. I don’t feel that I’m homeless. It’s a choice that I made to stay. And not only is this home, but I also have a strong sense of family with whom I live.”

New Life Evangelistic Center is the last walk-in homeless shelter in the Midwest. The new trial date is set for Nov. 9.
